A year into office, analysts Abel Abate Demissie and Ahmed Soliman asked in Addis Standard whether Abiy Ahmed could keep remodeling Ethiopia after an opening that had already shaken the old authoritarian state.
Their expanded commentary credited prisoner releases, diplomatic moves, and a freer public tone, then pressed the harder test: ethnic conflict, security-sector loyalty, and whether reform would deepen into institutions or stall as personality politics.
That question still frames the archive of 2019. Foreign praise and domestic hope were already colliding with displacement and contested federal bargains. The remodel metaphor assumed a workshop with shared tools. Ethiopia’s regions were not all in the same shed.
Reading the piece later, after wars and party recentralization under Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party project, shows how early the doubt was on the table. Continuity of reform was never guaranteed by speeches from the center.
