In April 2019, the ruling EPRDF council finished a closed-door meeting that The Reporter Ethiopia framed with a blunt headline: lest the Front be adjudged harshly by history.
The piece sat inside Abiy Ahmed’s early remake of the coalition that had ruled Ethiopia for decades. Prisoner releases and freer speech were already colliding with elite bargains, ethnic party machines, and the question of whether EPRDF would dissolve into a new unitary vehicle.
History did judge quickly. Within months the Prosperity Party project absorbed most EPRDF members while TPLF refused, and the federal bargain cracked into open war. Reading 2019’s anxious editorial tone later is almost eerie.
As archive, the EPRDF council moment is less nostalgia than autopsy. It captures the last season when the old coalition still pretended it could reform itself from inside before Abiy Ahmed’s center rebuilt power on different terms.
