Borkena reported in April 2019 that Eritrea had closed the Omhajer-Humera border crossing with Ethiopia, not long after the post-2018 opening had let people and goods move again.
Citing Eritrean Press, the story also noted troop moves near the Sudan frontier after Omar al-Bashir’s fall, and said restrictions were from the Eritrean side while Ethiopia was not blocking Eritrean entry the same way.
The closure mattered because Abiy Ahmed’s peace branding depended on open roads and family reunions. When Asmara shut a gate, the handshake looked thinner. Comprehensive agreements were still being promised, not delivered.
As geopolitics reference, Omhajer-Humera is an early crack in the 2018 euphoria. Border openings that can be reversed overnight were never the same as a settled peace architecture.
