Ethiopia Insight’s Okello Miru argued in April 2019 that long-suffering Gambella needed local empowerment, not another round of centrally administered land deals that sidelined residents.
The essay traced how commercial farming leases, Development Bank loans, and highland-dominated investor networks left many Gambellans out while land went underdeveloped or misused. Letters to the prime minister’s office about rejected loans were symptoms of a deeper exclusion.
Under Abiy Ahmed’s early tenure, regions like Gambella tested whether reform meant real voice or just new faces in Addis Ababa repeating old extractive patterns. Land, ethnicity, and bank access were the concrete fights.
The analysis still reads as a governance warning: without local agency, “development” becomes a word for someone else’s plantation. Gambellan solutions for Gambellan problems remains a useful title for that unfinished demand.
