Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed arrived for an official work visit in Italy on January 21, 2019, upon Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s invitation. He later attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland held from January 22 – 25, 2019. In his speech at the World Economic Forum, PM Abiy addressed how the political and economic reforms in Ethiopia create a favorable opportunity for investments and invited investors to Ethiopia. In his meeting with Prof Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of WEF, OM Abiy announced that Ethiopia will host the 2020 World Economic Forum. In their discussion, PM and Prof Schwab discussed the importance of a collaborative approach among government, the private sector and civil societies in addressing key global challenges.
PM Abiy Ahmed met with Bill Gates, co-Chairman of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and expressed his gratitude to Mr. Gates for the foundations work in health, agriculture and state capacity building. They further agreed to enhance cooperation in Agricultural irrigation and technology sector. He also met with Jack Ma, Chair of the Alibaba Group to discuss future technological advancements in society and international marketing. Jack Ma agreed to consider potential investment in tech hub in Ethiopia.
Dr. Abiy Ahmed held a productive discussion on bilateral issues with Belgium’s Prime Minister Charles Michel. The PM met interim President of the World Bank Group, Kristalina Georgieva to ask for sustainable technical and financial support from Ethiopia’s long-time development partner. He also convened an investment strategy discussions with CEOs of multinational corporations to identify opportunities for private investment. For instance, PM Abiy Ahmed met with George Soros, Founder of the Open Society Foundations and with Mr. Mohammed Al Shaibani, CEO of Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD). ICD is keen to invest in hospitality and agro-business industry in Ethiopia.
PM Abiy Ahmed returned to Ethiopia last night after completing his official work visit successfully.
