The Ethiopian government has started installing security cameras in Addis Ababa to combat crime.
The initiative, which will reportedly cost 43 million Birr ($1.5 million), is meant to ensure that the crime rate in the country’s capital does not increase.
Addis Ababa is said to be relatively safer than other African cities. However, police say there has been an influx of illegal weapons and crimes recently.
The Information Network Security Agency (INSA) is in charge of the camera installation. About 140 security cameras have reportedly been installed already. The cameras were placed around the Airport and the Meskel Square.
