Regional authorities in Oromia, Ethiopia, announced that 2,345 political prisoners are going to be released in the coming days. The spokesman of the regional government made the announcement on Friday, January 26, on his Facebook account. The announcement came ten days after the release of over 500 political prisoners.
For several months, demonstrations that challenged the government have continued in Ethiopia and these successive releases can be seen as a willingness of the authorities to reduce the tension.
Since the lifting of the state of emergency last August, protest have occurred regularly in the Oromia and Amhara regions. In 2015 and 2016, the two regions were the scene of demonstrations and a repressive tactic by the regime that claimed the lives of thousands of Ethiopians. Tens of thousands of people have been arrested and detained.
