Sidama ethnic group began the movement for the establishment of statehood request since last July 2018. The leaders of the movement even issued a warning to the government to maintain the schedule to hold a referendum. After analyzing their request, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) released a statement that the referendum will be held within the next five months and not on July 2019 since the parties were late in registering the referendum. When the board released this statement, the Southern Ethiopian Democratic Movement (SEPDM) was holding a meeting in Addis Ababa for 10 days. Even though the SEPDM held a vote to pass the referendum, the statement released by the party is still ambiguous.
