The attempted coup d’etat on June 22 claimed the lives of five government officials including Military Chief of Staff General Seare Mekonnen. He was laid to rest a few days later in his birthplace in Northern Tigray. Authorities are still investigating and continue to arrest suspected individuals. General Seare’s bodyguard has been arrested for the assassination and is being treated for gunshot wounds. With wounds still fresh, the government has appointed a new military chief of staff – General Adem Mohammed.
