Koysha Dam is the fourth hydropower plant in Ethiopia built on the Omo/Gibe river. The project consists of three dams that are currently operational: Gilgel Gibe with 200 Megawatts, Gibe II with 420 Megawatts, and Gibe III with 1,870 Megawatts. The Koysha hydropower plant is a large-scale project envisioned 25 years ago along with the design of Gilgel Gibe hydroelectric power plant. The mega project estimated worth of 2.8 Billion dollars guaranteed Ethiopia’s future in the sector along with Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
After Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) corruption was exposed, the future has become a nightmare for Ethiopia and anyone associated with the hydropower projects. It is to remember that Koysha hydropower plant employees have been holding protests recently demanding justice for not getting paid on time and cut on their salaries. Safety is also another issue raised by the protesters. Employees who managed to escape the horrors sat down with Mereja TV for this exclusive interview.
