Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the launch of the cleaning campaign on April 14, 2019, that would continue on the first Sunday of the coming months. Following the national call, youth in Mekelle cleaned their areas on Sunday morning. However, after finishing the campaign, the youth were assaulted and arrested by police for a reason still undisclosed. The situation became highly suspicious after reports show an ARENA party member and 10 activists for Enderta were among those who were arrested.
