Twenty-one-year-old Ciham Ali Ahmed has been in detention in Eritrea since 2012. When she was just 15 years old, she was arrested after attempting to cross from Eritrea into Sudan.
Others have been imprisoned for six months for doing the same. But despite never being charged with any crime, Ciham has remained in incommunicado detention for more than five years. Her family hasn’t seen or heard from her this entire time.
“When I learned of my daughter’s fate, I wanted to commit suicide because I had lost everything.” – Ciham’s father said.
Born in the US, but raised in Eritrea, Ciham is a dual Eritrean and US national.
