The general assembly of Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) has refused to accept Ethiopia’s popular Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen’s resignation request, according to Mereja.com sources in Bahir Dar where the meeting is currently underway. After the vote, the DPM has agreed to stay in the party’s leadership.
ANDM is one of the 4 parties that make up the ruling coalition, Ethiopian People’s Democratic Front (EPRDF).
EPRDF itself will hold its general assembly this week after its 4 member parties complete their conferences. Major leadership and policy changes are expected at the conference, which will be held in the southern Ethiopian town of Awassa (aka Hawassa). The current chairman of EPRDF and prime minister of Ethiopia, Dr Abiy Ahmed, is expected to be reelected.
ANDM has also decided to change its logo and rename itself Amhara Democratic Party (ADP).
