The Ethio-Eritrea disappearing border

Mereja.com

There is currently a huge and sudden shift in the relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea to the point that, as PM Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki have promised, there is practically no border between the two countries. The economies of Ethiopia and Eritrea are being fused as traders from both countries are buying and selling various products ranging from agriculture to manufactured goods without any governmental restriction. Thousands of Eritreans are visiting Ethiopia on a daily basis, and a similar number of Ethiopians are traveling to Eritrean towns without a visa or anyone at the border harassing them. It is becoming common to observe cars with Ethiopian and Eritrean license plates in Asmara and Addis Ababa. The cost of goods is declining in Eritrea as Eritrean traders are now competing with Ethiopian traders. This positive development is a significant step towards a Horn of Africa economic integration. Hopefully, we will soon start observing cars with Addis Ababa and Asmara license plates in Nairobi and Mogadishu as well.
