Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, today (watch the videos below). He was warmly received by the Ethiopian government and its head Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Residents of Addis Ababa did not want to embarrass the popular Prime Minister. Tens of thousands of them went out on the street to greet his guest. It was a positive day for the people of both Ethiopia and Eritrea who have been unnecessarily separated by Isaias Afwerki and his disciples in the Eritrean People Liberation Front (EPLF) and Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF). Ethiopians can be positive about today because maybe finally they can start to live in peace.
Isaias has returned to Ethiopia as a victor after waging a 30-year war against Ethiopia and a 20-year hot and cold war against the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF), an organization that he helped come to power in Ethiopia before its leaders turned their backs on him. He has destroyed Derg, crippled TPLF, banished his EPLF comrades, enslaved his own people, separated Eritrea from Ethiopia… and received a hero’s welcome today when he arrived in Ethiopia’s capital.
But even in triumph, Isaias is unable to show mercy to his victims who are languishing in Eritrean jails. The people of Ethiopia and their leaders gave him their love and respect today, but he showed them his middle finger by refusing to release Ethiopian prisoners from his dungeons.
PM Abiy is doing the right thing in trying to befriend Isaias Afwerki. It is the price of peace. As a leader of 100 million people, he has to prioritize things. What is shameful on the Ethiopian side is the silence of almost the entire media about the plight of Ethiopian patriots who are languishing in Eritrean jails.
