Ethiopian-born Alexander Assefa wins Nevada State Assembly election

Ethiopian-born Alexander Assefa has won a seat in the Nevada State Assembly on June 12 by defeating two other candidates.

Alex ran on a platform of “strong economy, quality of education, and government accountability.” He was able to get the endorsements of the Nevada Assembly Democratic Caucus, AFL-CIO, Nevada Veterans Association, National Organization for Women, and SEIU Nevada.

As an Assemblyman, Alexander will represent District 42, an area that includes Spring Valley town west of Las Vegas,

Before coming to the United States in 2000, Alex lived as a refugee in Kenya when he was a teenager. When he arrived in the U.S., he first settled in Alexandria, Virginia, and attended TC Williams High School. He then moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he became a pilot.

Alex moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2006, and started a small business. He also became active in the Nevada Democratic Party.
