The Oromo Peoples Democratic Organization (OPDO) leader, Abiy Ahmed will be named the next Prime Minister of Ethiopia, according to a former United States ambassador.
Herman Cohen, a former Assistant Secretary of State in a tweet with barely 24-hours to a parliamentary ratification of a recently imposed state of emergency (SoE) also warned that the measure needed to be repealed.
Cohen, who is big on political events in Addis Ababa said it was important for the government to withdraw the SoE before naming Abiy as PM ‘thereby avoiding tense vote in parliament and setting (the) stage for political reforms.’
OPDO, a quarter faction of the ruling Ethiopia Peoples Revolutionary Defense Front (EPRDF) only recently promoted Abiy to the post of OPDO Chairman. His immediate predecessor, Lemme Megerssa was named deputy but maintained his post as president of the Oromia Regional State.

  1. Unless there is a political change, a change to empower the people and the peoples’ assembly, whoever is going to be a prime minister, there still remains a great gap between the state and the people. Either the prime minister has to have full power of a state leadership to listen to the call of the people for justice and equality, or he can be squeezed between Weyane and the people.
On the other hand, it is an opportune time for Weyane to make a peaceful transition of power lest it will be an instrument of unabated civil strife as a result of which Tigreans will be targeted. The more Weyane forces its grip to power and tries to stay in the leadership, the more the Tigreans will be cornered or isolated from the rest of the Ethiopian people. The Weyane clique was preparing to get out of the chaos through its dream of disintegrating Ethiopia through Ethnic civil war. That ironically did not work for Weyane and rather backfired and now made its supporters and especially Tigreans who side with it enemies of the Ethiopian people. Creating a greater Tigray with the project of annexation of parts of Gondar, Gojjam and Benishangul did not work. All its malicious activities of division and destruction has been exposed day by day. Now Weyane has been 100% enemy of Ethiopians from corner to corner. If they use the opportunity of a peaceful transition, they can save lives and property; otherwise if they still believe in mass weapons, they will lean it the hard way.
