Patriotic Ginbot 7 merges with other parties: Now labeled as Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice

Following the appointment of Abiy Ahmed as the prime minister of Ethiopia in April 2018, the country has changed in various forms. The political landscape shifted on its axis when PM Abiy invited exiled opposition party members from abroad.

One of the major parties that returned home was The Patriotic Ginbot 7 which was considered a terrorist organization by the government until the appointment of Abiy. The come back of the leaders of the party was very welcomed by the people in Ethiopia.

The party was founded by Professor Berhanu Nega and Andargachew Tsige in 2008. In 2015 it signed a unification agreement with Ethiopian Peoples Patriotic Front, calling the merged party, Patriotic Ginbot 7. Following the call by the Prime Minister to get back to the country the party left its base in Eritrea and suspended all self-defense activities using firearms in all regions of Ethiopia.

On Thursday it was reported that the party has dissolved and merged with six other opposition parties to form a new one. The new party labeled as Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice is said to focus on bringing social justice in Ethiopia.

Professor Berhanu Nega was elected as the chairman of the party and the political activist Andualem Arage has become his deputy. It is known that the next national election will be held in 2020.
