The Prime Minister of Ethiopia has been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize award for his efforts to bring peace to his country and the East African region.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was nominated for the prestigious award by Henrik Urdal, the director of Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

Prime Minister Abiy is reportedly leading the Henrik Urdal’s 2019 Nobel Peace Prize Shortlist. Reporters Without Borders, The International Land Coalition, and The Arctic Council are also on the shortlist. UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi has also been nominated for the award. In total, about 219 individuals and 85 organizations have been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

“Neither the names of nominators nor of nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize may be divulged until 50 years have elapsed,” a Nobel Foundation statement read. “Such permission may not, however, be granted until at least 50 years have elapsed after the date on which the decision in question was made.”

In 2018, Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work to end sexual violence in war zones.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been making headlines since he took office last year. He has championed numerous reforms initiatives and led Ethiopia to make peace with Eritrea. The Ethiopian leader has also successfully reduced political conflict in the country.

Prime Minister Abiy was recently awarded the African Union (AU) African Gender Awards 2018 for appointing women to top government positions.
