A suicide bomber in a car has attacked an Ethiopian military base in Somalia. Somalia-based Islamist militant group al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the car bomb explosion, which occurred on Saturday.
The incident happened at the Ethiopian base in Southern Somalia. Al Shabaab said 16 Ethiopian soldiers were killed in the accident. While Somali authorities have revealed that the bombing resulted in causalities, they did not specify the exact number of people killed.
The bomber was in a minibus carrying vegetables. The bus reportedly picked up speed and caught fire before hitting the gate of the Ethiopian military base.
Ethiopia is part of the African Union peacekeeping force called AMISOM. The military coalition has been fighting for years to defeat al Shabaab and restore peace in Somalia.
