Ethiopian authorities have banned Syrian refugees from begging on the streets. Officials were forced to enact the ban due to concerns that the practice is getting out of hand.
According to Yemane Gebremeskel, the deputy head of Ethiopia’s Immigration office, the practice has “become a burden” hence the ban. The Syrian nationals reportedly carry signs written in Amhara while loitering the streets.
Yemane says many of the Syrian nationals came into Ethiopia between August and December last year after fleeing the war in their country. Over 100 have reportedly applied for refugee status in Ethiopia. […] CONTINUE READING
