Bereket Simon, born in Gondar from his Eritrean parents, is a prominent political figurehead in Ethiopian politics. There have been rumors that Ato Bereket's real name was Mebrehatu Gebrehiwot before it was changed to Bereket Simon in remembrance of a fallen soldier that was killed in the civil war between the Derg regime and the Woyane. Ato Bereket has actively participated in the revolution that threw over Derg and served higher governmental positions in EPRDF, he has played a vital role in Ethiopia. He was one of the early supporters of Meles Zenawi. After the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi held power, Bereket was his right-hand man. He is known for his strong political views and viewed as one of the most excellent political orators. He was also one of the writers for Addis Raey Magazine under a pen name. His political ideology, a direct resonance of Meles Zenawi's view, was widely seen during the 2005 Ethiopian national election. His power in Ethiopian politics and influence was seen in his actions and speeches following the aftermath of the 2005 election. Seeing his dominance in politics after resigning from office, one can't help but wonder who Bereket Simon really is. It is to remember that following Prime Minister Abiy's appointment and his reform agenda, there has been an ongoing arrest of senior military figures, high-level intelligence personnel and their associates over alleged large-scale corruption cases and years of human rights abuse against dissidents and rebels. This week it was reported that Ato Bereket Simon was arrested on corruption charges.
