Tigray and Amhara activists downplay peace agreement between ADP and TPLF

One of the traditional conflict resolution mechanisms between conflicting parties in Ethiopia is mediation by religious fathers and community elders. This mechanism came handy in mediating the tension between Amhara and Tigray regions and their respective ruling parties, Amhara Democratic (ADP) and Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF). Religious leaders and community elders discussed with the heads of both regions, Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael of Tigray and Ato Gedu Andargachew of Amhara.  Following that he leaders gave a press release of peaceful reconciliation last Tuesday. In their speech, both leaders emphasized how the people of Tigray and Amhara regions are related and bounded by the same culture and religious assets. Even if most people perceived the reconciliation in a positive way, some parties are taking a different stand. It is to be recalled that ethnic tensions has been rocking the ethnically diverse country. Mereja TV interviewed political activists Fitsum Birhane and Getachew Shiferaw from Tigray and Amhara regions to gain their perspective on the issue.
