Ethiopia was once named a dangerous place for journalists. Before the recent reform, many journalists have been sentenced to years in prison for reporting on injustice and atrocities done by the government. Journalists are obligated to have a strong commitment to present the truth and support national growth and bring about social change. This loyalty to their profession didn’t agree with the previous era of EPRDF that stripped their right to safety and persecution. However, after the appointment of Abiy Ahmed as a prime minister. this changed especially when he started his term by freeing all journalists who were wrongly accused. The question remaining in everyone's mind is whether this a PR propaganda or are really journalists safe in Ethiopia. In a meeting that was held at UNECA the safety of journalists in the country was discussed. The recent incident that led to two journalists from Mereja TV being beaten while on the job was raised as an example.
