General Berhanu Jula, Deputy chief of staff & military operations division head of Ethiopian National Defense Force talked with VOA about the recent killings in Gondar, Amhara region. According to him, the military was there to protect the assets of road construction companies in the area while it was being moved with approval from the regional government. But unknown forces who wanted to get in the way opened fire on the military and the soldiers fired to the sky to disperse them. He added that the civilians that were hurt in the shooting were shot by the unknown forces and the military troops are in no way responsible for the killings. Nine people were reported killed and fifteen others were injured in the incident. In a protest that was held in Bahir Dar and Gondar city, residents held the military troops responsible for the killings and condemned the act. National Movement of Amhara (NAMA) also blamed the military for the incident.
