The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is the largest of the Oriental Orthodox Christian churches. One of the few pre-colonial Christian churches in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church has millions of followers, the majority of whom live in Ethiopia. It is a founding member of the world council of churches. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is in communion with the Eritrean orthodox Tewahdo church, the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the Syrian Orthodox Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, having gained autocephaly in 1959. The church also keeps most of the country’s political and social history in its old churches and monasteries.
The patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox church gave a press conference regarding the church, mainly about the team that had started a movement to open Oromia regional Orthodox Tewahdo Church council. On the press conference, among the other ten standpoints, the church fully opposes the idea and ordered the law department to charge the individuals to court.
