Officials of the United Nations (UN) say Eritrea’s human rights record has not improved since the country signed a peace agreement with Ethiopia last year. The peace agreement, which made headlines across the world, ended decades of hostilities between the two East African countries.
However, the UN Human Rights Council said nothing has changed in Eritrea in terms of human rights.
Kate Gilmore, U.N. Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, said Eritrea has missed an opportunity to implement judicial, constitutional and economic reforms.
“The peace agreement signed with Ethiopia should provide the security that the government of Eritrea has argued it needs to discontinue this national service and help shift its focus from security to development…. In the absence of promising signs of tangible human rights progress, the flow of asylum-seekers is not expected to drop.” Gilmore explained. […] CONTINUE READING
