Andargachew Tsige is freed; receives a hero’s welcome

Ethiopian opposition leader Andargachew Tsige has been freed after four years in prison and received a hero’s welcome at his parent’s house in Addis Ababa today.

Andargachew Tsige was abducted at Yemen’s Sana’a International Airport on June 23, 2014, by the Ethiopian regime’s security forces.

The circumstance of his abduction has been a subject of great controversy. The primary suspects who may have collaborated with the Ethiopian regime security forces include Eritrean, British and U.S. Governments. The Ethiopian regime does not have the capacity to pull off such a complicated international abduction of a high profile opposition politician without the involvement and assistance of multiple countries.

Even though Andargachew has British citizenship, the British Government has done practically nothing to pressure the Ethiopian government to release him. Not only that, they have put Andargachew’s colleague, Dr. Tadesse Biru, on trial for terrorism in a U.K. court last year. The court has set him free after hearing the laughable charge. The British Government is one of the biggest obstacles against the Ethiopian people’s struggle for democracy and freedom.

We extend our congratulations to the family of Andargachew Tsige.

We also express our deep appreciation for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who has given hope to the people of Ethiopia by ordering the release of all political prisoners and leading Ethiopia to the path of peace and reconciliation.
