A tripartite working group meeting on migrants stranded in Libya was held in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa on March 19, 2018, involving the African Union, the United Nations and the European Union. The participants in the meeting were briefed on the latest developments on the issue of stranded migrants in Libya and the efforts to repatriate them to their countries or to a third country through the efforts of the tripartite working group in cooperation with the Libyan authorities. The working group visited Tripoli in February.
The head of the anti-illegal immigration in Libya, Brigadier Mohamed Beshr, said during the meeting that so far 20 refugee centers have been closed, indicating that work is continuing to close the rest of the centers at intervals in the coming months according to a plan developed for this purpose. He explained that the number of immigrants in the current shelters until March 29, 2018, amounted to 5166 migrants, including 708 women and 143 children.
