Ethiopian military's deputy chief of staff General Birhanu Jula and Amhara Region security chief General Asamenew Tsige have given contradictory statements regarding the killing of civilians in western Gondar earlier this week. It is to be recalled that nine people were reported killed and fifteen others were injured when a gunfire exchange occurred between the military and unknown forces. According to general Birhanu Jula unknown forces who wanted to get in the way opened fire on the military and the soldiers fired to the sky to disperse them. He added that the civilians that were hurt in the shooting were shot by the unknown forces and the military troops are in no way responsible for the killings. On the contrary, General Asmenew condemned the actions of the military and said that shooting must have never happened.
