For the past few years, Ethiopia has been hit with a shortage of foreign currency. The shortage has already forced many businesses, especially construction companies to slow down their activities. Illicit financial flows and money laundering is one of the reasons behind the shortage. Following the appointment of prime minister Abiy Ahmed, a campaign has been launched to control the illegal transaction of the dollar in the country, and measurements to combat it are being taken. Today, a Nigerian passenger was arrested trying to smuggle one hundred forty-one thousand dollars at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The passenger was caught while scanning through customs. The incident is not the first time that foreign currency has been intercepted by the authorities. Customs Commission Secretarial Office told the press that the office will continue pursuing smugglers and tighten security. This is a recent update to the successive cash smuggling headlines in Ethiopia.
