Felege Hiwot Referal Hospital, located in the Amhara region, Bahir Dar, serves residents of the city and people from surrounding rural areas. But it has been reported that the hospital has been hit with a severe medical drug shortage and is affecting patients severely. In an interview with the BBC, the hospital’s Executive Manager Ato Abiy Fisseha has said that the reason behind the shortage is that the hospital owns the Amhara Pharmaceuticals Supply Agency 40 million birr in debt that was not paid due to budget constraints. Ato Abiy added that the hospital can not buy medicine from private drug suppliers either because it is very expensive and not affordable. Felege Hiwot Referal Hospital is one of the five government hospitals that serve more than 9 million residents of Bahirdar and its surrounding areas.
