498 guns seized at a commander's residence

Despite the Amhara region police's continuous efforts to control possession of illegal firearms, it hasn't slowed down. Today, Bahir Dar City Police confiscated four hundred ninety-eight guns in the house of a Police Commander named Wubetu Shiferaw. According to Deputy Commander Ayelign Tekelilo, this is the highest number of illegal guns seized in the region so far. The suspect is currently under custody and investigation is also underway on other suspected individuals. It is to be recalled that over the past few months several thousands of pistols have been confiscated in different parts of the country.  According to Ethiopia's gun law,  persons of minimum age 24 may lawfully acquire, possess or transfer a firearm or ammunition. And, the information must be retained in an official register. State agencies are required on demand, to maintain records of the storage and movement of all firearms and ammunition under their control. In order to implement this protocol, The Amhara Region Militia Secretarial Office has announced that anyone who possesses firearms should register within 17 days.
