The Twist performed by Hibre Qelemat Theater Group

The Twist is a dance done by swiveling the hips. It became a worldwide dance trend in the early 1960s. It is a dance that was inspired by rock and roll music. It inspired dances such as the Jerk, the Pony, the Watusi, the Mashed Potato, the Monkey, and the Funky Chicken, but none were as popular. The 1960s were also a notable decade for Ethiopia that saw developments in the Ethiopian political, legal, and economic fields. With the coming of Marxism–Leninism Political ideology, Ethiopian also adopted fads from other cultures including the twist dance. Hibre Qelemat, a theatre group based in Addis Ababa, performed a musical play celebrating one of the most influential decades in Ethiopia.
