Former Somali region’s president Abdi Mohamoud Omar (Abdi Illey) was arrested for organizing and ordering violent attacks in Jigjiga from August 2 – 6, 2018. Police have been investigating for months and filed additional charges on Abdi Illey and 47 co-conspirators. The new charges compile allegations for inciting violence using social media and obstruction of justice that led to deaths of hundreds of people in Jigjiga including priests and members of the Orthodox Church, and destruction of religious, public and private properties. The group, known as ‘Hego’ was influential on Facebook for inciting riots and hate crimes among residents of the town and also warned the law enforcement to not take any actions.
