The Lower Valley of the Awash is a UNESCO World Heritage property covering fossil-rich badlands in Ethiopia’s Afar region. Finds here—including remains associated with Australopithecus and other early hominins—helped establish East Africa as the premier outdoor laboratory for human origins.

The valley’s geology preserves stratified deposits that allow scientists to date and contextualize fossils and stone tools. It complements nearby Hadar and Middle Awash research areas and underpins Ethiopia’s scientific tourism and museum narratives.
Protecting the valley means balancing research access, local community needs, and the pressures of infrastructure and climate on fragile desert landscapes.
