Tiya, south of Addis Ababa in the Soddo region, is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its carved stelae—standing stones marked with swords and enigmatic symbols that mark ancient burial grounds.
Compared with Aksum’s monumental obelisks, Tiya’s stones are smaller but archaeologically crucial: they illuminate cultures of the Ethiopian south whose histories are less prominent in imperial chronicles. Surveys suggest dozens of stelae originally stood in the area.
Tiya is a compact reminder that Ethiopia’s heritage map extends far beyond the northern highlands—and that documentation and site protection remain urgent.
