From Middle French < Latin epitome, epitoma < Ancient Greek ἐπιτομή (epitomē, “an abridgment, also a surface-incision”) < ἐπιτέμνω (epitemnō, “I cut upon the surface, cut short, abridge”) < ἐπί (epi-) + τέμνω (temnō, “to cut”).
