Employee performs phlebotomy and routine laboratory tests and maintains records. Work is performed under general supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities:
I. Specimen Collection, Handling, and Processing:
Ø Performs phlebotomy and processing of specimens for in house test and to be sent to outside labs.
Ø Receives specimens from wards and/or phlebotomy.
Ø Process specimens including receiving, sorting, accessioning and storing.
Ø Follows established procedures when processing specimens for analysis.
Ø Ensure that specimen is received, accessioned and delivered to the laboratory in a timely manner.
Ø Aliquot specimens properly as needed.
Ø Store specimens in proper place and temperature; discard specimens that exceed retention time.
Ø Ensure all specimens meet the referral test requirements.
II. Test Performance:
Ø Notifies Laboratory supervisor/ Laboratory Manager of problems occurring during the test performance that would affect patient test results.
III. Test Result Reporting:
Ø Ensure all critical results have been called and documented by workstations.
Ø Record results in the log book.
IV. Instrument Related Responsibility:
Ø Ensures proper functioning of instruments before releasing of patient results.
Ø Perform routine preventative maintenance of equipment as scheduled and documented.
Ø Notifies Laboratory Supervisor of instrument malfunction.
V. Purchasing and Inventory control:
Ø Utilizes all supplies and equipment in an appropriate and cost-effective, efficient manner.
VI. Other Job-Related Tasks:
Ø Demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care.
Ø Works independently as well as collaboratively.
Ø Demonstrates punctual and reliable attendance.
Ø Actively pursues ways to improve laboratory efficiency.
Ø Participates in maintaining a clean and orderly facility.
Ø Adheres to all laboratory standard procedures.
Ø Protects patient confidentiality by abiding by hospital confidentiality statement.
Ø Rotates through assigned work areas of the department as required.
Ø Rotates through weekend and evening shifts as required.
Ø Assists other laboratory personnel when own work is completed.
Ø Performs other duties as required.
I. Job-Related Standards
Ø Exhibit through your day to day actions the hospital slogan “where the patient comes first”, understand that the needs of the patient are our first priority;
Ø Practice with Kindness, ethics, and Honesty;
Ø Be always on time and physically available during all duty hours;
Ø Under any circumstances never leaves the hospital without physically handing over to another colleague;
Ø Carry out all documentation per laboratory standard without exception this includes:
A. Clearly label all specimen with patient name, age and time of collection as the sample is collected;
B. Document results in the appropriate book along with the time of completion;
C. Filling out appropriate forms;
Ø Confirm appropriate sample is collected for the appropriate test;
Ø Sign all result before dispatched and Never sign a totally erroneous result;
Ø Inform any critical values to the physician directly and communicate it;
Ø Communicate clearly with your patients about what you are about to do to them, similarly, keep a smooth communication among your colleagues AND inform the patient of the expected result time and communicate clearly with pts faced with delays and always provide them with every possible option;
Ø Never criticize one another in front of a patient nor try to pass blame to other departments or colleagues in any situation as every one of us shares the same obligation to satisfy our patient need;
Ø Give constructive criticism to a colleague or subordinate promptly but off course in a private room…depending on the situation you may also get another colleague involved;
Ø Respect the hospital dress code (uniform), be well groomed and maintain good hygiene;
Ø Maintain patient confidentiality;
Ø Avoid talking on your cell phone for personal matter while with a patient; if work related please excuse yourself and inform the patient that the call was work related;
Ø Be willing to assist patients and colleagues promptly when they seek your help;
Ø Take good care of the laboratory equipment and carry out daily maintenance and maintain a clean workbench;
Ø Strive to continuously improve your skills and knowledge and attend all required training;
Ø Avoid chewing gum, eating or drinking while on duty;
Ø Strive to provide a level of service that exceeds patients’ expectations whenever possible;
Ø Have a positive attitude and let’s all avoid being defensive;
Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
Ø Diploma or Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology area with professional license as a Junior/ Senior Medical Laboratory Technician approved by Food, Medicine and Health Care Administration and Control Authority of Ethiopia.
