Photo: Mazid (@MazidNews) via X

Egypt has provided “the necessary defensive support” to Gulf states since the regional war broke out on February 28, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told a security conference in Bahrain on Saturday.

Abdelatty spoke during a panel on the “Pillars of Regional Security” at the 22nd Manama Dialogue, the annual conference organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, which runs from October 30 to November 1. “Egypt provided the necessary defensive support to the Gulf states since the outbreak of the war on February 28, 2026, and that is our duty and our responsibility,” he said, according to Al Jazeera Egypt and other Arabic outlets. He added that the support was “purely defensive in nature” and that he could not go into “sensitive details.”

The minister said the security of the Gulf states is “an integral part” of Egypt’s own national security and of Arab security, and that Egypt rejects and condemns the attacks on Gulf countries, Daily News Egypt reported. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry statement on his remarks did not say which attacks or which states he meant, the paper noted. Saudi Arabia has reported repeated missile and drone attacks by the Houthis in Yemen in recent weeks, including missiles fired at Riyadh and Taif.

Abdelatty warned that a new round of fighting between the United States and Iran would be “more dangerous and more destructive” than the war that began in February after US and Israeli strikes on Iran. “A war can begin with a unilateral decision, but no one can unilaterally control its consequences or stop it,” he said, according to Iran International. “The wars and the military escalation in our region, along with the continuing and unacceptable attacks against the Gulf states, have exposed a profoundly dangerous strategic reality.”

He called for a regional early warning and rapid response system that could identify risks and act before crises erupt, rather than manage them after the fact, Daily News Egypt reported. “Deterrence without diplomacy may postpone war but cannot prevent it, while diplomacy without deterrence capabilities may fail to protect peace,” he said, according to the Egyptian State Information Service. He said threats to waterways affect global stability, energy and food security and international trade, and that protecting shipping needs stronger regional coordination and the securing of energy facilities and sea lanes, Al Arabiya reported. Global trade should not be held hostage to decisions to escalate, he said. Egypt has lost billions of dollars in Suez Canal revenue since attacks on ships in the Red Sea began in late 2023.

Abdelatty described Egypt’s vision of regional security as one built on the rule of law, on refraining from the use of force and on not interfering in the internal affairs of other states, together with deterrence capabilities to back diplomacy. He said lasting stability also requires a Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, and repeated Egypt’s rejection of the displacement of Palestinians, annexation and settlement building.

His remarks were widely shared in Egypt. The Egyptian channel ON posted that the minister had taken part in a session on the consequences of the regional conflict, and Al Arabiya’s Egypt account led with his warning about threats to waterways. One Egyptian user, sabryabbes, a television director according to his X profile, shared the quote on defensive support with several news accounts, calling Abdelatty “our foreign minister.”

Egypt’s role has angered the Houthis. Earlier this week, the group’s leader, Abdulmalik al Houthi, said Egypt’s backing for Saudi defense amounted to a declaration of war on Yemen. Abdelatty did not mention the Houthis by name in the remarks reported on Saturday.

The Manama Dialogue ends on Sunday. On the sidelines, Abdelatty briefed Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on Egypt’s efforts to contain the regional escalation, Egypt Today reported, and discussed economic cooperation with his Bahraini counterpart, according to Akhbar Egypt. He also met Yemen’s foreign minister to discuss the security of shipping in the Red Sea, the news account Mojz News reported on X.

Sources

Daily News Egypt

Egyptian State Information Service

Egypt Today (@EgyptTodayMag) on X

Mojz News (@mojz_news) on X

Al Jazeera Egypt (@AJA_Egypt) on X

Iran International (@IranIntl_En) on X

Al Arabiya (@AlArabiya) on X

ON (@ONTVEgy) on X

sabryabbes (@sabryabbeees) on X

Akhbar Egypt (@Akhbardotcom_eg) on X

Mazid (@MazidNews) on X

Mereja Media, Houthi leader on Egypt

Egypt has provided “the necessary defensive support” to Gulf states since the regional war broke out on February 28, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told a security conference in Bahrain on Saturday.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

7918
12103,12105,1059,12106,12107,9754,12104,12087,12108,3468
post-838648","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world-news","tag-badr-abdelatty","tag-bahrain","tag-egypt","tag-gulf","tag-houthis","tag-iran-2","tag-manama-dialogue","tag-red-sea","tag-regional-security","tag-saudi-arabia
https://i0.wp.com/mereja.com/index/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/2026-11-01-H-abdelatty-mazid.jpg?fit=1280%2C720&ssl=1
["GET
