More than 276,000 people have been displaced since August, UN agencies say. Photo: UN OCHA Yemen (@OCHAYemen) via X

The World Health Organization says 1,677 people have been killed and 7,395 wounded in Yemen since fighting escalated in early August, and that more than 276,000 people have been displaced, many of them in Taiz.

The figures, in a WHO situation report released on Thursday and reported by the Aden newspaper Al Ayyam, citing dpa and the Associated Press, bring the total number of casualties to 9,072 as of October 25. The report does not say how many of the victims were civilians and how many were fighters, according to Arabi Post, which also reported on it.

The WHO recorded 559 casualties in six days, from October 20 to 25, including 103 people killed and 456 wounded, an average of 93 a day. That is roughly half the daily average of 168 in its previous report, the agency said, even as people continued to be killed and wounded in several provinces.

Marib recorded the highest number of deaths among the provinces covered in the latest period, with 45 killed out of 143 casualties, followed by Taiz with 34 killed out of 237 casualties and Lahij with 21 killed out of 158, according to the report as described by Al Ayyam.

The number of displaced people reached 276,301 by October 24, including more than 46,000 families, and Taiz now hosts about 46 percent of all registered displaced people, the WHO said. Restrictions on movement from Aden to Taiz and the west coast are delaying deliveries of supplies, at a time of severe shortages of medicine, fuel and water and disruption to waste collection, which raise the risk of infectious diseases, the agency warned. Only six of 31 mobile health facilities in Marib are still working, it said.

The report also said that Al Thawra General Hospital in Taiz came under fire on October 20, wounding three soldiers and a patient, and that Al Rayyan airport in Mukalla was targeted by drones and a missile the next day, without casualties or major damage, Arabi Post reported. The WHO said it had delivered about 30 tons of medical supplies and 56 trauma and emergency kits to health facilities in Taiz.

The WHO report also said an ambulance in Taiz was destroyed by a projectile on October 20, killing its driver and a paramedic, and that health officials in Shabwah now put the toll from the October 19 missile strike on Al Alam camp near Ataq at 69 dead and 166 wounded, higher than the figure in the national register. Three confirmed cholera cases and one death in Marib point to the disease spreading beyond the south, it said.

Taiz governor Nabil Shamsan told reporters in a briefing on Friday that the Houthis were trying to send the city "back to the stone age," The Guardian reported. He said no more than 1,000 cubic meters of water a day was reaching the city, against daily needs of about 35,000, that 120 health centers had been suspended and that about 1,800 people needing dialysis could not get supplies. Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi has said the way into Taiz is open for food, medicine and aid and denied that the city is under siege.

On Thursday, both sides reported new deaths. The website 26 September said a Saudi air strike on a house in the Al Barh area of Maqbanah district, in Taiz province, killed 12 people, most of them women and children, and wounded three. The claim could not be independently confirmed, and the coalition did not comment on it. On the government side, the Ministry of Human Rights (@mohr_yemen) said its minister had reviewed Houthi violations in Taiz on Thursday and that legal files were being prepared to hold those responsible to account. Officials in Taiz had earlier called for an urgent investigation into Houthi shells suspected of carrying toxic substances.

On X, Yemenis described life on the front lines. The account of Al Ayyam (@alayyam_info) shared the WHO report with an aerial image of destroyed homes. The local executive office in Al Musaimir, in Lahij, condemned what it called Houthi shelling of residential areas in Habil Hanash, Ahama, Qarin and Al Duraija, and called for a stronger humanitarian response, the Aden news site Minbar al Akhbar (@platform_ne) reported. The Houthi appointed governor of Lahij, Ahmed Jarib (@Ahmedgr2015gma1), urged people in southern and eastern provinces to stay away from what he called mobilization by the Saudi "enemy."

The WHO said the situation remains volatile and that the risk of disease outbreaks is rising as water, fuel and medicine run short, according to Al Ayyam.

Sources

WHO situation report No. 9 on ReliefWeb

The Guardian, October 30, 2026

Al Ayyam on X (WHO report, via dpa and AP)

Arabi Post on X (WHO report)

26 September on X

Yemen Ministry of Human Rights on X

Minbar al Akhbar on X

Ahmed Jarib on X

The World Health Organization says 1,677 people have been killed and 7,395 wounded in Yemen since fighting escalated in early August, and that more than 276,000 people have been displaced, many of them in Taiz.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

7918

post-838458","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world-news
https://i0.wp.com/mereja.com/index/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/B-yemen-displaced-tents-ochayemen.jpg?fit=720%2C720&ssl=1
["GET
