A Type 1 Fixed team delivers outpatient emergency care from a fixed site under standards other countries recognize. Senegal’s military team was classified earlier.

Health Minister Mekdes Daba tied the result to national preparedness and noted that Addis Ababa will host the Seventh Global Emergency Medical Teams Meeting from November 3 to 5, the first time it is held in the African Region. EPHI Director General Mesay Hailu said the recognition was earned through independent verification. WHO Representative Francis Chisaka Kasolo credited national leadership and partners including UK-Med, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and ECHO.

The team has already deployed for a landslide in Gamo Zone and for outbreak support, according to WHO and EPHI.

Access remains the constraint in conflict areas. Physicians for Human Rights has documented looting and occupation of health facilities, attacks on ambulances and intimidation of health workers in Ethiopia’s conflicts, including in Amhara since fighting there intensified in 2023.

Sources:

WHO Regional Office for Africa ENA Ethiopian Public Health Institute Physicians for Human Rights

Ethiopia’s National Emergency Medical Team has met the World Health Organization’s Type 1 Fixed standard, making it the first civilian emergency medical team in the WHO African Region to do so, WHO said.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

8,7913

post-754849","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ethiopian-news","category-health
["GET
