According to the Amhara Association of America, fighting and rights violations still stretched across more than eleven woreda and city administrations in eight Amhara zones between September 7 and 13, and that map is the first fact readers need before any single incident. North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, and Central Gonder all appear again in AAA’s weekly, which was updated on September 14. Additional developments were logged in North Shewa Zone of Oromia Region. That geography undercuts the story Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government keeps selling abroad, which is that operations in Amhara are a tidy security cleanup that is nearly finished.

Inside that wide map, Merawi Town in North Mecha is the civilian harm that this brief puts first, because it has received less English attention than the school drones and Wegera detentions from the same week. AAA says that before dawn on September 9, government forces attacked religious students near Mahdere-Sibhat Kidist Mariam Church and killed at least one Ethiopian Orthodox student, according to preliminary accounts in the weekly. AAA’s weekly did not give a confirmed wider death toll. What the report does put on the page is a dawn raid on religious students at a named church, in a town that is not a remote bush position. For Amhara families who have watched churches and schools enter the war’s list of dangerous places, that detail matters more than another contested battlefield score.

Zegabi’s English write-up of the same AAA week, published on September 16, carried the Merawi church attack into a wider audience alongside the rest of the civilian strip. The @zegabimedia feed on X has been one of the few steady English pipes for Amhara weekly tallies that most international desks still skip. That does not make every figure final. It does make it harder for the authorities in Addis Ababa to pretend the Merawi allegation never left Amharic channels. When a U.S.-based documentation group and a Horn English outlet both describe a dawn attack on Orthodox students at Mahdere-Sibhat Kidist Mariam, the burden of answering shifts toward Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party government, whether or not officials ever confirm the death.

Wegera in Central Gonder remains the week’s other ground-level cruelty, and it belongs in the same civilian frame even if it was already summarized elsewhere. AAA says that on September 7, after fighting with Fano, reinforcing government forces killed a 10-year-old boy identified as Temesgen Yehuale and detained more than 28 civilian farmers, including women and elderly people, in Senbetye and Bra-Tadewos. The accusation, AAA reports, was family ties to Fano personnel. A named child dead after a clash, and a church student killed before dawn two days later, are the kind of local facts that do not fit holiday speeches about restored order.

In North Wollo, AAA cites September 7 fighting in Lasta Woreda after Fano units allegedly hit a government ration convoy near Sorba, with more than 19 government personnel said to have been taken to Lalibela Hospital. On September 9 in Dawunt Woreda, AAA relays a Fano claim of heavy government losses, the capture of more than 150 government personnel, and the collapse of a government military division, along with seized weapons. Those prisoner and destruction numbers echo reporting carried by Shabelle Media Network via allAfrica, and they remain contested until more than one independent outlet or an official statement confirms them. South Wollo’s Kelala Woreda also saw reported fighting around Tirtira and Liguama the same day, again with unconfirmed casualty counts. Contested Fano wins do not prove the war is over for Abiy Ahmed. Contested federal wins do not prove rural Amhara is pacified either. What the geography shows is that North Wollo and South Wollo were still active fronts in mid-September.

Elsewhere in the weekly, AAA records multi-day fighting in West Gojjam’s Wemberima Woreda with claimed government deaths in the mid-thirties to forties, fighting in Awi’s Jawi Woreda that allegedly pushed government units toward Mandura, Chagni, and later Fendika, and North Shewa engagements in Berehet, Mida-Woremo, and Mojana-Wadera. The file also notes reported looting of farmers’ oxen and grain in the Sasit Cluster, and alleged defections of government personnel into Fano-aligned units in the Shewa subregion and Central Gonder. Those claims, like the prisoner tallies, remain one-sided where journalists cannot verify them on the ground. They still widen the picture beyond a single woreda talking point. Eight zones, farm theft, and shifting front lines are not the language of a finished cleanup.

Air power again reached areas far from any neat front line. AAA says government drones struck Dehna-Mariam Kebele in Bahir-Dar-Zuriya on September 10 and 11, and that the second strike, ahead of Enkutatash, left five civilian farmers injured and damaged public facilities, according to preliminary accounts. On September 7 in Dera Woreda of South Gonder, AAA reports coordinated drone strikes on primary schools in Sana and Mecho during student registration, with significant civilian casualties whose precise toll stayed unconfirmed in the weekly. AAA links the timing to Amhara Fano National Movement announcements about resuming formal education. The school strikes and the Merawi church attack belong in one sentence about who is being hit when the Ethiopian government talks about security: students, farmers, and children, not only named combatants.

Sources:

Amhara Association of America (Sept 7 to 13 war update) Zegabi @zegabimedia on X Shabelle Media Network via allAfrica

An Amhara student in Bahir Dar on 5 October 2009 (Damien Halleux Radermecker, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 2.0) [file photo].
