{"id":718323,"date":"2010-04-16T16:48:10","date_gmt":"2010-04-16T20:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenrightnow.com\/?p=10822"},"modified":"2010-04-16T16:48:10","modified_gmt":"2010-04-16T20:48:10","slug":"health-insurance-companies-invested-in-fast-food-chains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.com\/index\/718323","title":{"rendered":"Health insurance companies invested in fast food chains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>From Green Right Now Reports<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understood that health insurance companies profit from fast food &#8212; indirectly, via clogged arteries, rising blood sugar levels and the obesity that&#8217;s been linked repeatedly to high-fat, high-sugar content in the types of foods served in many drive-throughs.<\/p>\n<p>Now comes news that the health insurance titans are profiting <em>directly<\/em> as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>Scientific American <\/em>reports that a<a href=\"http:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/AJPH.2009.178020v1\" > new study<\/a> published in the <em>American Journal of Public Health<\/em> that has found U.S. health and life insurers have invested $1.88 billion in the top five publicly traded food chains.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the study argue that these companies should be held to a higher standard, rather than be allowed to prop up the industries that undermine public health; and that their investments reveal where their heart is.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our data illustrate the extent to which the insurance industry seeks to turn a profit above all else,&#8221; said Wesley Body, senior author of the study, in a news release. &#8220;Safeguarding people&#8217;s health and well-being take a back seat to making money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Scientific American <\/em>article reported that &#8220;the largest burger backer&#8221; was Northwestern Mutual, with $422.2 million invested in fast food corporations, including $318.1 million in McDonald&#8217;s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Green Right Now Reports It&#8217;s understood that health insurance companies profit from fast food &#8212; indirectly, via clogged arteries, rising blood sugar levels and the obesity that&#8217;s been linked repeatedly to high-fat, high-sugar content in the types of foods served in many drive-throughs.
