City Council debates that proposal, the Times&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-dwp-rates26-2010mar26,0,787576.story\">David Zahniser reports that an even larger rate increase is being considered<\/a> in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-dwp-rates19-2010mar19,0,2229372.story\">Department of Water and Power is planning to boost the<br \/>\nelectricity bills of its customers by 37%<\/a> over the next four years as<br \/>\npart of its effort to cover steadily rising costs.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers were provided as the council committee reviewed the first<br \/>\nof four rate hikes planned by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. <\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, there is already some opposition.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That&#8217;s an extraordinary burden on our homeowners and businesses,&quot; said<br \/>\nCouncilman Paul Krekorian, who called the four-year plan &quot;unacceptable.&quot;<br \/><\/br><\/p>\n<p>\nWhat do you think of the rate increases?
