Rick Martinez of the Anaheim Police<br \/>\nDepartment. The officer, whom Martinez declined to name, was in plainclothes.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As the officer walked out of the restaurant about 3:45<br \/>\np.m., a 39-year-old man began to attack the off-duty officer \u201cfor some unknown<br \/>\nreason,\u201d Martinez said. He said the suspect hit the officer with his hands and<br \/>\npummeled him into the corner of the restaurant.<span>&#0160;<\/span><o:p> <br \/><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The officer tried to push the man off, but the man<br \/>\ncontinued to assault the officer, Martinez said.<o:p> <br \/><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The officer then pulled out a handgun and fired at least one<br \/>\nround at close range on the suspect, he said. The suspect was hit in the<br \/>\nabdomen. He later died. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&#0160;<\/o:p>The officer suffered at least one broken rib and possibly a<br \/>\nbroken jaw and nose, Martinez said.<o:p> <br \/><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Around a dozen people were inside the restaurant when the<br \/>\nshooting occurred, he said.<o:p> <br \/><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Before the shooting, the suspect was seen walking in and<br \/>\nout of stores in the shopping center near the Del Taco, Martinez said. Witnesses<br \/>\nreported that the man was talking to himself and appeared to be agitated and<br \/>\nacting unusual, he said.
