An Illinois House committee has approved a plan to allow voters to decide whether to abolish the state’s No. 2 post.<\/p>\n

House Speaker Michael Madigan says the position of lieutenant governor is unnecessary.<\/p>\n

His proposed constitutional amendment would go before voters in November.<\/p>\n

The Chicago Democrat says he’d been considering the move before Scott Lee Cohen won the Democratic nomination in February. <\/span><\/p>\n

Cohen resigned after questions about past allegations of domestic battery and steroids use.<\/p>\n

The House Executive Committee voted 8-0 today to move the idea to the House floor.<\/p>\n

Three Republicans voted “present.” They say the amendment should wait. The number of such questions is limited on ballots, and the GOP says a better idea for changing the charter might come along.<\/p>\n
