Or going too far?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2008 Metrolink disaster in Chatsworth, now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-metrolink22-2010jan22,0,5862623.story\">formally blamed on an engineer<\/a> who was text messaging and ran a red light, has prompted federal safety investigators to call for installation of video surveillance cameras in all locomotive control cabs in the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/lanow\/talk-back\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a7ff41ff970b-pi\" src=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a7ff41ff970b-500pi\" style=\"margin: 4px; float: left;\" title=\"Talk back L.A.\"><\/img><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Southern California\u2019s five-county commuter service put the nation\u2019s first such cameras in its locomotives last year, part of a series of measures intended to prevent a repeat of the\u00a0 head-on crash that killed or injured more than 150 passengers. It is one of the most effective ways to enforce safety rules, officials argue.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>But a major railroad union, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and\u00a0 Trainmen, has sued Metrolink, claiming the cameras were illegally installed, violate employees&#8217; privacy rights and can increase safety risks by placing new \u201cpsychological burdens\u201d on workers trying to concentrate on their jobs. <\/p>\n<p>The three-angle Metrolink video above gives an example of what the cameras capture.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>What do you say?
