Misery sat under the skin, she said, but so did pride in a country that never wore a colonial flag, rock-hewn churches, Lake Tana monasteries, Gondar\u2019s Fasilidas castles, and Axum\u2019s Ark legends.<\/p>\n<p>Lalibela\u2019s eleven churches cut from living rock still stop skeptics at dawn when white-shawled pilgrims chant in Ge\u2019ez. Coffee ceremonies and eskista shoulders filled the travelogue\u2019s quieter pages.<\/p>\n<p>Kept as culture archive, the Traveler file is not development brochure fluff.
