Before dawn on 8 September, a reported drone strike hit May Shemet in Hintalo woreda, southern Tigray. Dimtsi Weyane carried a Tigray Communication Bureau statement blaming federal forces and naming civilian dead, including a mother and a four-year-old. Later local reporting raised the toll to 13 and said passenger buses carrying Tigray Defense Forces personnel toward Raya were among the damaged vehicles. Kulu Media treated the casualty figure and the military-target claim as emerging, not independently verified, and noted that Addis Ababa had not publicly answered the specific allegation at the time of writing.<\/p>\n
The strike lands on a week when Pretoria diplomacy is already cracking. On 6 September the TPLF-led regional government rejected African Union envoy Olusegun Obasanjo as mediator, saying it had \u201cnot found in him the impartial and proactive mediator required.\u201d AFP and Addis Standard both carried the charge that his recent Mekelle visits lacked neutrality and concrete proposals. International partners had still been urging both sides to keep talking after Obasanjo\u2019s August stop. Shererina fighting in early August, which Al Jazeera called one of the gravest breaches since 2022, already pushed wounded fighters and civilians into Sudan.<\/p>\n
Physicians for Human Rights and OJAH\u2019s mid-August brief Stolen, Broken, Destroyed documented the same playbook that emptied clinics during the big war: ambulance attacks, looting, armed takeovers, and ENDF drone hits on Amhara facilities into 2026. The UN investigative mandate on Ethiopia was allowed to die in 2023. WHO still does not list Ethiopia on its public attacks-on-health tracker. Abiy Ahmed\u2019s Prosperity Party government keeps offering dialogue language while the northern map fills with drones, rejected mediators, and unfinished Pretoria obligations. Hintalo is another data point, not an aberration, for anyone still pretending the regime in Addis Ababa has closed the file on northern warfare.<\/p>\n
